Zen Budo Martial Arts, also called Zen Budo Karate, is primarily a self-defense system. Martial Arts vary greatly based on their aim, but our aim is what we believe to be the original purpose of Martial Arts: to learn simple, no-nonsense techniques to protect yourself from attack.
The "style" that we practice is called Goshin-Jutsu which literally means "Technique to defend the spirit". Self defense consists of protecting your balance and taking the opponent's balance, and protecting your vital areas and attacking your opponent's vital areas. All martial arts have some of this in them, which is why we are so welcoming of instructors and practitioners of all styles.
Nearly everything Zen Budo does is with an active resisting partner in self defense scenarios. You will learn to block a punch, escape a grab, do a take-down, and how to target the weaker parts of your opponent's body with the stronger parts of your body.
The curriculum of Zen Budo Karate is not to learn hundreds of techniques, but rather, to learn the best, most practical, most widely applicable techniques and then apply them to any situation. By learning these simple techniques well and combining them in different ways, the student can learn to deal with any situation.
The very idea of self defense, the idea that through practice and knowledge a smaller or weaker person can overcome a larger or stronger one is the core of an empowerment ideal. Along with this physical training comes philosophical lessons in self control, respect, perseverance self discipline and behavior changes in both children and adults.
Zen Budo gives out more than a hundred scholarships to our program every year to students in need. Martial Arts should not be solely the domain of the most elite and most successful, but should be accessible to all irrespective of price.
As a tool of empowerment for those less fortunate in society, martial arts is a practice of self-esteem, leadership, and assertiveness for all, including and most importantly to defend the most vulnerable populations in our society.
Zen Budo welcomes everyone irrespective of any physical or mental differences they may have. Everyone can learn self-defense. Everyone.
At Zen Budo, you do not have to bow down to us, you do not have to salute flags or nations, or engage in religious rituals. No one is ever better than anyone else and belt rank doesn't give you power over another person. Belt rank is not a measure of your ability to win a fight, it's simply a measure of your mastery of our curriculum. Belt rank is not a big deal here. If you're looking for awards, trophies, status, or hero worship, look elsewhere. If you're looking for great training, come here. Everyone here is equal and anyone is free to ask questions at any time.
"Rule number one: Karate is for Self-Defense ONLY! Rule number two: First, learn rule number one."
"Those who dream by night, in the dusty recesses of their mind wake to find that all is vanity. However, the dreamers of the day are more dangerous. They may act on their dream with open eyes, and make it possible."
-Lawrence of Arabia
"All that is gold does not glitter
Not all those who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither
Deep roots are not reached by the frost
From the ashes, a fire shall be woken
A light from the shadows shall spring
Reforged shall be blade that was broken
The crownless again shall be king."
