About Us

Christopher M. Bowers

Chris (left) is the founder of Zen Budo Karate, taking it from one student in 2014 to an organization that teaches 25 classes per week and more than 400 students per year. Mr. Bowers has 35 years of martial arts experience and 20 years of teaching experience. He holds a black belt in Tang Soo Do Karate, in Japanese (standing) Jujitsu, and holds various other ranks in Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Goshin, Okinawan Kempo, and Kyusho. He has been an avid Tai Chi Practitioner all his life. He created the Goshin curriculum now taught at Zen Budo, focusing on a small set of the most practical effective techniques geared for-self defense.

Kris Ruiz

Kris Ruiz was the first student of Chris Bowers when the organization started in 2014. Kris started by earning rank in Aikido, then proceeded to earn a brown belt in Karate and in Japanese (standing) Jujitsu. He is currently training for Black Belt with Zen Budo Martial Arts. A security officer, Kris has used his training regularly for self-defense and control on the job.

Delton Brooks

Delton Brooks (facing) was a personal disciple of a Muay Thai Master and has competed overseas. He also earned a lightweight kickboxing champion title, and continues to help Zen Budo with certain topics such as knee and elbow striking. Delton is responsible for increasing enrollments at Zen Budo and his classes are always filled to capacity.

Alex Pinnachos

Alex Pinnachos trained for several years with Jhoon Rhee in Tae Kwon Do and received a brown belt in that organization in 1994 . Since then his tastes have broadened to Jujitsu, Kung Fu styles and most recently Zen Budo Martial Arts. Al is a lifelong friend of Chris Bowers, and has trained alongside him as early as their days at Gonzaga's High School martial arts club, which he and Chris attended together.

Cameron Prince

Cameron Prince (left) has had several years of training in Krav Maga before he came to work for Zen Budo Karate. Cameron has 7 years of teaching experience working for Mr. Bower's other after school programs. He recently became a head instructor at Jamestown Elementary and is pursuing his blue belt in Zen Budo Karate

Lindsay Howard

Lindsey, pictured here (with thumbs up) is an assistant instructor who volunteers for our Lincoln Park class.  A Blue Belt, she has been a student of Chris Bowers for over a decade.

Jami Noguchi

Jami isn't one of our instructors, but we wish that he was! Jami does logos and banners and artwork for Zen Budo. When Chris met Jami in 1991 he was already a 2nd degree black belt. Jami also provides vision, ideas and encouragement to Zen Budo, web help, photography and video. I don't know what he's doing in this photo but it looks cool.
